Russian advertising — this one for a network of tanning salons. In the streets of Moscow (where tanning salons are very popular), you can find black men handing out flyers for them (I’ve seen this three times).
A few years ago, in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, I was lying on the beach and a man walked by with a parrot, calling out for people to take a photo with it. Another man walked by urging sunbathers to visit his jet ski stand and go for a ride. Finally, a guy walked by with a black man on a leash and yelled out that people could pay a small sum and be photographer with “my African.”
The level of racism here never fails to shock me, no matter how many times I witness it.
